iVictrola iPod Amplifier: Get back into the groove with a new twist

"You might think that the gramophone died with Nipper the dog, but it’s remarkable to see something of a bygone era relive through the blitz of technology. The iVictrola iPod amplifier created and designed by Matt Richmond might appear to be an old-fashioned object that brings back the memories of a bygone era however, is an extremely convenient gadget of the iPod age. What looks like an antique at the first sight can play your iPod without using batteries or an electrical plug or a solar panel for that matter, but the device runs on an acoustic amplification based on its simple and smart engineering. Handcrafted from recycled walnut pieces from the high-end furniture, the horn is made from metal that actually maximizes the amplification to keep you grooving. Expected to be a limited edition device, the iVictrola iPod amplifier will be priced somewhere near $400 and will be available soon at Design Without Reach."

Airless Tires

"anyone who has ever driven a car dreads getting a flat tire, but what if your tires could never go flat? in recent years a number of companies and inventors have been working on creating airless tires that would be impossible to puncture. the most well known design in this field is the michelin tweel, a combination wheel and tire. the design was one of the first to emerge, bringing the idea of non-pneumatic tires to the public's attention. but michelin has been slow to roll out the technology beyond the test phase. in light of this, a company called resilient technologies has also been working on an airless tire. the company recently announced that prototypes of their honeycomb-like tires will ship in 2011 for use in the US military. this will no doubt help the airless tire field, as will other startup companies working on the task like britek. you can see their design below and a video explaining more. with this much competition in the field, we may see non-pneumatic tires on consumer vehicles in the near future.

"The original" leather postal messenger bag

"Handcrafted, meticulously finished American leather. J.Crew has faithfully recreated the beautiful, oil-tanned mailbags carried by the U.S. Postal Service from 1868 until the 1970s, when the original leather satchels were replaced by blue nylon bags. Designed to improve with age, our hand-oiled, hand-stained, hand-burnished postal messengers are sewn by experienced artisans on century-old machines. Each piece of leather is carefully selected for quality; each historically correct, heavy copper rivet is set by hand. As a result, each "original" leather postal messenger is one of a kind with its own unique character. Buckle-strap closure on flap. Interior back-wall patch pocket. Unlined. "

Squid-inspired Vado showerhead

"Giant squids, despite being elusive creatures, have remained a subject for sci-fi movies but Vado has brought this rare deep-sea creature out and to your shower. Seemingly inspired by a squid, this infinitely adjustable Vado showerhead has six flexible tentacles that can be aimed anywhere you like. This freakingly cool showerhead might look like a piece from some sci-fi movie, but this Sculpture shower head from Vado would glue any sci-fi aficionado in the shower."

Key-Plus-Ring (Why Didn't We Think of That?)

Photo: Zachary Zavislak

"One day in June, Scott Amron came home and tossed his keys on the kitchen table. Then he paused, eyeing his pocket-jinglers, and had a Hudsucker-ish inspiration: Why not combine the key and the key ring? Amron makes a living turning far-out concepts into workable prototypes for outfits like Oxo and Polder Home Tools, so he rendered a design and posted it on his Web site,amronexperimental.com. Within a day the sound of head-slapping had reverberated across the Net. Within a week he was in touch with a manufacturer. Within a month he had more than 25,000 preorders for his key-plus-ring, which can be cut to fit almost any front door in the US. Only one problem: The design he posted used his own front-door key as a model; a resourceful thief would have no trouble making a house call. "I had to change my locks," Amron says. Small price to pay for an idea everyone wishes they had thought of first."

Survival Straps

"Tie One On: Backwoods Bling That Could Save Your Life

Most jewelry doesn't do anything. OK, maybe it sparkles, but that's not a function. Imagine if your arm ornament could transform into 20 feet of 550-pound-test rope. That would make it this Paracord Survival Bracelet. Sure, you can find instructions for knotting your own on the Net, but why not let SurvivalStraps.com do it for you? If you buy from them, after you use your backwoods bling to crest Half Dome (or, more likely, tie that Ikea purchase to the roof of your Jetta), they'll reweave it gratis—just include the harrowing story of how it was used. The true story."

Price: $19.95, Available in over 900 color combinations

Lineaus Athletic Company

"Lineaus Athletic Company, based out of the artist's enclave of Marfa, Texas, makes old world-style leather sporting equipment. Handmade by Lineaus himself using the best materials, his beautiful work will last a lifetime.

To test their durability Lineaus puts his work up to the trials of prison life. For the first medicine bag he made, he explains, "I gave it to the Oregon State Penitentiary in 1987 because they have a famous boxing program and I wanted to find out if it would last. I recently visited to check up on it and it looks great. If you want to find out if something will last forever, that's a good test."

The medicine bag uses triple locked-stitching with five cords of polyester thread and five-ounce leather. Stuffing, composed of waste-thread, fills an interior bag and Kapok makes up a middle layer between the inner and outer bags. Weighing in at 150 pounds, it's heavy but soft and naturally balances itself using a continuous rope hanging mechanism for minimal swing.

Like with the entire Lineaus line, the medicine bag gets better the more you use it, softening the leather and breaking in the stuffing. At $4,800 it's an investment, but one that lasts for generations to come.

In addition to the medicine bags, Lineaus crafts medicine balls , foot and rugby balls and squat bars. He makes them all to order with an Alden sewing machine, numbering them and fire-branding them with the Lineaus name. Wisconsin chrome tanned leather (essentially the same as full-grain baseball glove cow hide) makes the products extremely durable but soft to the touch. Unlike vegetable-tanned leather, chrome tanning leather leaves it porous, softer and longer-lasting when cared for appropriately. Lineaus recommends regular oiling with R.M. Williams Saddle Dressing.

For more info and to purchase any of the products visit Lineaus Athletic."

Robot Hummingbird Designed for Spying

"researchers have created a small robotic drone that flies and looks a humming bird. the new robot was developed by aerovironment, backed by DARPA, a division of the US pentagon. the robot is to be used for spying, using the bird-like design as a way to conceal its purpose. although the bird has only been able to fly for 20 seconds, DARPA has just giving its creators 2.1 million USD to build the next iteration. DARPA is hoping to have a tiny drone that is capable of speeds of 10m/s, operable inside buildings and controllable from up to 1 km away. next time you see a cute little hummingbird, be careful what you say."
