Unfathomable

A Must Watch Video that definitely makes you think.

Wilton Pool House

New York-based Hariri & Hariri Architecture have completed a 1200 sqaure ft pool house which rests upon the 3.5 acre property of a suburban Connecticut residence. The design of the pool house serves as a contrast to the traditional architecture of the exisitng home. The dominate extended ceiling provides shelter for those lounging around the pool, enjoying the water, or sitting on the patio.

Designed as “a minimalist sculpture in the landscape”, the pool house is characterized by its long angular archway of wood which spans the length of the pool and then bends to provide cover for an outdoor seating area. The frame is made of Brazilian Walnut and makes “the place warm, nautical and sculptural at the same time.”

The wood floors extend past the interior of the home to create a hovering deck above the pool allowing users to lounge right above the surface of the water.

Inside, the pool house contains a living/entertainment room, kitchen and bar area, and a simple bathroom. Glass sliding panels enclose the structure allowing it to be transparent and light. By opening the interior spaces, the areas do not detract from the wrapped wooden component.

Project: Wilton Pool House
Architects: Hariri & Hariri Architects
Location: Wilton, CT, USA
Total Lot Area: 3.5 acres
Total Poolhouse area: 1,200 sf plus 3,630 sq ft poool and stone terrace
Program: Spa, pool, indoor/outdoor living space, bath & kitchen
Status: Completed 2007

Silvestris Speedboats

Former Spyker designer Maarten de Bruijn may have left the Dutch sports carmaker a number of years ago, but his passion for cars wasn't forgotten when he started his next venture specializing inluxury boats. Now, Silvestris Haute Motive Concepts, a pun on the design links to luxury cars that the boats have been constructed with, has unveiled its first product, the handsome 23 foot Silvestris Sports Cabriolet.

While most boats don't have a Cabriolet designation in their name, the Silvestris uses the company's 'Aquamotive' design language as its main source of inspiration. Hence, the two-seat area where the driver and passenger are seated can be completely sealed off or opened, making the Silvestris a roadster for the water. At the back of the boat, two more seats can be found, but these can be completely hidden from view via a remote controlled hatch.

Other 'Aquamotive' features include the car-like cabin, swathed in sea-water resistant leather, and the aluminum body panels that are riveted and bonded to a tubular space frame.

Powering the speedboat will be a range of engines, including two Volvo diesel engines, one Volvo petrol engine, and the range-topping Silvestris 8.1L V8 made by Bones Marine. The 8.1L V8 puts out 560hp (417kW) through its single prop stern drive system, propelling the Silvestris Sports Cabriolet to speeds in excess of 55 knots, or 60mph (100km/h).

The Art of Guinness

"London's Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising joins in to celebrate Guinness' 250th anniversary with their current exhibition, "The Art of Guinness." Paying tribute to the legendary stout, the show simultaneously examines how the company remains so successful after all these years.

Prominently featuring the work of John Gilroy, whose use of zoo animals and the tagline "My Goodness, My Guinness" brought instant recognition to the beer and its advertisements, the exhibit will also include graphic designs by other commissioned artists like H.M. Bateman and Edward Ardizzone.

From print advertisements and TV commercials to drink trays and beer coasters, the "Art of Guinness" makes for a lesson in advertising that's as fun as drinking the beer itself.

CBS Embeds a Video Playing Ad in a Print Magazine

"In the latest example of finding media innovation where you’d least expect it, CBS is embedding a video player in a print ad in Entertainment Weekly that will serve up a video buffet of its fall lineup.

The CBS foray into a print/digital alliance plays full-motion video at a crisp resolution. The ad, dubbed by CBS and partner Pepsi Max “the first-ever VIP (video-in-print) promotion,” works like one of those audio greeting cards. Opening the page activates the player, which is a quarter-inch-thick screen seen through a cutaway between two pages concealing the larger circuit board underneath.

The audio quality is equally good (extremely poor video shot by me notwithstanding), but beware: there are no volume controls, and in a quiet environment, it’s quite loud. This is surely a intentional design feature, aimed at getting the attention of people nearby.

Unlike the wholly unsatisfying debut of the e-ink cover in Esquire magazine last year, this works.

The video-enhancement will appear in the September issue of Entertainment Weekly, but only in what sounds like a relatively small subset of the circulation: the promo itself will be in every issue, but the video portion only in some subscriptions delivered to New York and Los Angeles. It was released Tuesday to media outlets."

Nikon D700 Guerrilla Style Billboard

"Nikon took its cue from our celebrity-obsessed paparazzi culture to launch the brand's D700 model in Korea.

At a busy Seoul subway station, Nikon mounted a huge interactive, light-box billboard displaying life-like images of paparazzi. Huddled together as if at a premiere, the "paps" appear to be jostling and competing for the best celebrity snap. The celebrities in this case were the passersby, who automatically triggered a deluge of flashing camera lights as they walked past the billboard. The accidental superstars then followed the red carpet all the way out of the station and into a mall - directly into the store where they could purchase the new D700. Mission accomplished. - Lisa Evans"

Survival Straps

"Tie One On: Backwoods Bling That Could Save Your Life

Most jewelry doesn't do anything. OK, maybe it sparkles, but that's not a function. Imagine if your arm ornament could transform into 20 feet of 550-pound-test rope. That would make it this Paracord Survival Bracelet. Sure, you can find instructions for knotting your own on the Net, but why not let SurvivalStraps.com do it for you? If you buy from them, after you use your backwoods bling to crest Half Dome (or, more likely, tie that Ikea purchase to the roof of your Jetta), they'll reweave it gratis—just include the harrowing story of how it was used. The true story."

Price: $19.95, Available in over 900 color combinations
